CHAPTER 8
EXERCISE TIME!
8.1 - SUMMARY 📝
You did it: you made it until the last chapter of this training! Well done!
How did it go? What did you think of the workflow? Are you already starting to feel like a 3D specialist? Because you will be a true 3D guru: we have no doubts about that! We’d love to hear your feedback, so feel free to use the chat box for that purpose as well ;-)
First of all, we’ve created a quick recap of all the steps we took during this training:
✍️ FROM REQUEST TO APPROVED ✅
☝️ 1. Define the request type & desired outcome
✍️ 2. Fill out the request form
🛍️ 3. Collect all necessary assets for the vendor
📤 4. Submit the request form + assets
📥 5. Receive the first submission
📋 6. Review if it meets the naming standards
↳ Visual Assessment? Continue with question 7!
↳ File Assessment? Skip 7 & continue with question 8!
👁️ 7. Review the renders on visual aspects*
🔎 8. Review the file with the assessment form**
📝 9. Share comments & improvements with vendor
🦄 10. File approved? HURRAY!
* colors, textures, details, simulation, overall quality, etc.
** review all assessment criteria applicable to your file
8.2 - VISUAL ASSESSMENT 🌟
So after absorbing all of this information, the best way to really get it into your system is by doing it: practice makes perfect! But before we throw you into the complex world of those hands-on file assessments, let's start with an easy exercise.
Do you remember the exercises we did in chapter 2, about the visual assessment? We reviewed a couple of renders, comparing one version with an issue, and another version where this issue was fixed. At the end we identified each problem together - in normal English: without any complicated 3D-terminology yet! 😌
So let's locate these issues in the assessment form now! 📌
FIRST EXERCISE!
Step 1 🧐
Connect each style's issue to one of the criteria of the assessment form
Step 2 🏆
Found it? Hover over the image to reveal the criterion & issue description
Step 3 🌈
Try to define a clear comment about each issue for the assessment form.
Want to read the full explanation of a criterion again? Use the blue button!

Also when you're doing visual assessments, it's important to send clear comments to your vendors about the issues you see. Try to be accurate and specific, to avoid confusion and miscommunication about what should be changed about the style.
Even for visual assessments, it could be useful to have the list of criteria from the assessment form on the side. Just to use it as a checklist, to make sure you've checked all aspects important to your style! And if you come across any issues, you can use the criteria list as a 'cheat sheet' to find the correct terminology used in the software ;-)
8.3 - FILE ASSESSMENT 🚀
So now it's time for the real deal, the file assessments: it's your time to shine! ✨
We've prepared some exercises to practice with recognising certain issues that can appear in files. Below you can find some information about each file, from basics like (imaginary 🦄) PLM codes and submission count (which you can use to fill in the basic info at the top of the assessment form), to the request types of each request. Because don't forget about that little detail:
☝️ The request type reveals a lot about the importance of each criterion! 🤫
In other words: use the request types mentioned, to determine which criteria are applicable and which are not applicable (N.A.) to the request type. For instance: criteria about patterns can usually be disregarded for a colorway request. But in a block request on the other hand, the criteria about colorways don't really come into play! So use this information to your own advantage: the less criteria applicable, the easier! 🙌
SECOND EXERCISE!
Step 1 📥
Download the .BW files of the exercises via this button:
Step 2 🧐
Try to find any mistakes, issues and deficiencies in the file, using the criteria of
the assessment form. Fill in "N.A." for every criterion not applicable to the file.
Step 3 🏆
Done? Compare your comments & assessment score with ours! You can find
an overview of our results behind every "View Results" button, where you can
also download our completed assessment form with comments & screenshots.
* Exercise 1 and 2 share the same BW file!
Start by reviewing the file as a "New Style" request (exercise 1). Afterwards, review the same
file as a "Colorway" request (exercise 2). Can you notice the difference the request type makes?
Always remember that every file assessment is different, and that it will always be a very subjective process - no matter how hard we try to standardise it by creating different rules for standardisation and a complete list of assessment criteria ;-)
So if you don't agree with any of the comments of our assessment forms, or feel like some of the criteria/comments don't apply to the workflow you use in your division: no problem! We encourage you to find your own methods, preferences and standards for assessing files - these exercises and the list of criteria are purely to get you up and running at the start of your 3D experiences! 😉
But if you have any questions about the exercises, our comments, or our recommendations in the criteria explanations: please don't hesitate to reach out! That's what we're here for! You can book a live 1-1 Q&A session with one of our trainers (find a link on the online training page), or you can always use one of below support options.
